Fatal collision #20/2016, Markham Road at Nashdene Road, Driver and vehicle sought in Fail-to-Remain


On Thursday, March 31, 2016, at 9:46 p.m., police responded to a call for a personal injury collision at Markham Road and Nashdene Road.

 

**UPDATE, APRIL 6, 2016** Police continue to search for the car involved in this Fail-to-Remain fatal collision. Investigators believe this car is actively being withheld from investigators by people who either know or work with Saeed Maravvej Torbati.

Investigators would like to remind the public that anyone who may be aiding the accused by withholding the car from police may face charges. These charges could include being an accessory after the fact, and obstruction of Justice.

**UPDATE, APRIL 4, 2016** On Sunday, April 3, 2016, Saeed Maravvej Torbati, 25, of Ottawa, surrendered to police. He was arrested and charged with:
1) Fail to stop at scene of accident cause death

He appeared in court at 1911 Eglinton Avenue East on Monday, April 4, 2016, room 402, 10 a.m.

The vehicle involved in the collision is being sought by police. The vehicle is described as a  Mercedes Benz CLS550, with front-end damage.

**UPDATE, APRIL 3, 2016** Saeed Maravvej Torbati, 25, of Ottawa, is now wanted in relation to this investigation.

Although he lives in Ottawa, investigators believe he comes to Toronto, frequently, for business.

**UPDATE, APRIL 3, 2016** Investigators have now identified the vehicle believed to be involved as a 2012 black Mercedes Benz CLS 550 with Ontario licence plate BYVK 272.

A picture of a vehicle similar to the suspect vehicle is now released.

It is reported that:

  • a 56-year-old woman was attempting to cross Markham Road, on the south side of Nashdene Road
  • a Mercedes vehicle approached the intersection
  • the pedestrian was struck by the vehicle in the intersection
  • the male driver of the Mercedes vehicle brought the vehicle to a stop after the collision and exited the car
  • after a short period of time, the male driver returned to the vehicle and fled the scene


The woman was pronounced at the scene. The vehicle and driver involved in the collision are being sought by police. The vehicle is described as dark, with front-end damage.

Police are asking residents and business owners in the area to contact investigators if they have any security camera video. Police also would like to thank those people who have already provided video.
